In the previous post, I mentioned about how to remove viruses from USB drives, Now I am discussing about the prevention of viruses while surfing the web.

Many web site’s use some type of ActiveX (a browser plugin that can have access to system) Control to install malicious code. Although the ActiveX control is not harmful at all.

Old versions of Internet Explorer that were present in version of Windows XP earlier than Service Pack 2 does not have the ability to protect you from that activeX plugin from being installed automatically. So, In Windows XP Service Pack 2 Microsoft added a newer version of Internet Explorer called Internet Exlporer 6 Service Pack 2. [...]

I’m always in a hunt for software with better organizational capabilities. Because without organizing yourself, you’ll never be able to advance in the future at an optimum speed. A few days back, I stumbled upon a software called stablauncher. I downloaded it, installed and configured it .. and wow it has got the ability to organize your shortcuts in a very nice way. You can organize in categories and accessing it is very easy as it resides faded on the top of the screen like the task bar at the bottom. When we hover our mouse on it, it comes out. Take a look at its picture while it is out:

Nowadays viruses have created many problems for Home and Business users, I have seen many PC’s becoming virus houses from where viruses spread to other PC’s. These viruses usually spread through removable media (Flash Drives), where they place their autorun.inf files and when anyone opens the drive in his PC, it also became virus deceased.

Many people complaint that they have installed Anti-Virus but it came of no use, because virus was not detected by the Anti-virus program. There can be two reasons for it. Either the program is not performing it’s job or Updated virus definitions were required.

Without keeping an Anti-Virus Up-to date, it is not guaranteed that the virus will be detected. It is an important aspect of the Anti-Virus which should be looked into.

Some people suggest that if you have got a virus then format your hard disk to get your system virus free. But if you do some mistakes then the whole time of installing windows will be wasted, since the virus will again become active in no time. I have kept in mind this point also. So read the following carefully.

In the First part I am covering about how to prevent viruses from entering into you PC’ through Flash Drive.

Technique to prevent One’s PC from virus entering through Flash

Do not open any drive with double click in My Computer instead you can see the drive through Start->Run

Type the drive letter followed with colon (: )

Windows is very bad in terms of protecting itself from other programs. For example, I was installing some device drivers and after I finished everything and double clicked the Windows sound control in the status bar, it gave me the following error:

“Volume Control Program has not been installed”

I did a little research and came to know that sometimes, some device driver will play with the volume control utility and it’ll corrupt the program.

Sometimes we tend to forget the things which we consider very small and unimportant. And this forgetfulness grows with the use of technology. As our knowledge grows, instead of keeping all of it in our mind, we tend to store some information in our computers, some of it is stored in our calendars, emails, to do lists etc. And even then, most of the times the techie people forget where to look for what :-).

Today I went to a client to install one of their time, attendance and security systems, I had to first install Windows XP there and then get it configured with the network. Now the problem came when the computer started and it went to the logon screen. The in-charge there was keen to make everything auto-function.

And surprisingly, even this is a very small setting, I couldn’t do it in first go. And then when I did it, I decided to write about it. So there are the three methods which you can use for changing the setting for auto logon in Windows XP.

1- Using the Control Panel

This is the safest one as it uses default Windows GUI to alter the settings.
Just go to Start –> Run –>

Ever since I have started using Windows Vista, I have been wondering what Microsoft has done with their range of Operating Systems. I know that most of the people will say that Vista is better than other operating systems and blah blah but the problem is that it has been, for me, so far the most complex operating system ever. I was not comfortable with Linux when I started learning but this Vista thingy, I dont know what to say.

Nowadays, I think Microsoft is hiring people who would make things more complex. Windows Vista uses a lot of wizards. Surely wizards are a lot of help but simplicity and elegance is something that Windows Vista is lacking.

As an example, I had to see my LAN network connection properties, it took me [...]

If you want to search for multiple files at a time in the search window you can use the keyword
filename1;filename2;filename3
For example if you wanted to search kaspersky and mundu type
kaspersky;mundu

By the usage of wildcards you can improve the results of your search. Here are some details about it.

Use the asterisk (*) as a substitute for zero or more characters. If you are looking for a file that you know starts with “gloss” but you cannot remember the rest of the file name, type the following:
gloss*
