In the previous post, I mentioned about how to remove viruses from USB drives, Now I am discussing about the prevention of viruses while surfing the web.
Many web site’s use some type of ActiveX (a browser plugin that can have access to system) Control to install malicious code. Although the ActiveX control is not harmful at all.
Old versions of Internet Explorer that were present in version of Windows XP earlier than Service Pack 2 does not have the ability to protect you from that activeX plugin from being installed automatically. So, In Windows XP Service Pack 2 Microsoft added a newer version of Internet Explorer called Internet Exlporer 6 Service Pack 2.
A newer version of Internet Explorer 7 is now available at MS download center that is somewhat more secure that was discussed later. It also includes an option ‘Phishing Filter’. It scans any opened web site for any malicious code and tells if it can harm your system. You should consider updating it. Before updating, you should be prepared because of the learning experience. Because it has a simplified interface you will not be able to to find many of the buttons on first glance. Like stopping a web page from loading.
Before downloading any file the internet explorer warns you with a yellow bar appearing right beneath the address bar. Same is the case while any web page want to load any activeX control. You should be careful about the trustworthy of the website from which you download this control.
There are some more points that should be considered for safer browsing. Try to avoid downloading any thing from sites which have cracks or pornography. You can also use a safer search method except of searching directly on google.com search through scandoo, This web site filters the search results of google, yahoo and msn, to tell you which site could harm your computer.
To best protect from internet threats and viruses you need to have Internet Security software. These software combine a firewall (better than windows XP’s own Firewall) and Anti-virus both in a single package. Some of them are listed below
This part end’s now. Keep visiting to read the next part in the series
