I found out the Internet Explorer 7 has a built in functionality of multiple home pages. It means that like you set your home page in every browser, in Internet Explorer you can actually set multiple home pages which will open in tabs when Internet Explorer is started.

To set multiple homepages in Internet Explorer 7, go to Tools à Internet Options à General

Just keep on specifying all your pages which you want to be your home pages in new lines like the picture above. You can specify as many as you like. All the web pages will open in new tabs when Internet Explorer is started.

While researching, I thought I should share it with all the Technize readers. So here’s the solution:

This problem occurs only in Windows XP SP1 or less. I would recommend updating with the latest security updates of Windows.

Download the following registry file and double click it to add the information to the registry.

Restart your computer and now the problem should be solved.

Shutdown After A Specific Interval of Time:

If you want to shutdown the system after half an hour go to command prompt and issue the following command:

shutdown -t 1800

Where 1800 is the no. of seconds the system should wait before shutting down. In this case, the system will wait for 1800 seconds.

If you are not comfortable with the command line, then go to Start –> Run –> shutdown -i

This will bring you the Graphical interface where you can configure when to shutdown the system.

Shutdown At A Specific Time:

1- Through Command Prompt

Issue the following command to schedule your tasks via command prompt

at 00:00 cmd /c shutdown -t 30

This command will be executed at 12AM and display a warning that the system is shutting down after 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, the system will shutdown.

2- Through Scheduled Tasks GUI

If you are not comfortable with the command line, then you can simply go to the scheduled tasks ( Start –> All Programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> Scheduled Tasks) and schedule the system to shutdown automatically at the specified time.

If we need to know a bit of detailed system about our system, the following methods can be helpful.

Method# 1: Through MSINFO tool

Msinfo is a tool provided by Microsoft which gives you quite a detail about your system. To  run this tool, go to Start –> Run –> msinfo32

This will open up a window which show you a lot of details about your system.

Method# 2: Windows Help And Support

Interestingly enough, Windows Help And Support gives a very good organized information about the system. Actually I prefer to use this method most of the time where applicable. To find the system information, go to Start –> Windows Help And Support.

Under Pick A Task, select “Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems”

From the left hand pane “Tools”, select My Computer Information.

Now from the right hand pane you can select different types of information that you can get. For Example, you can see the general information about the computer or you can have a look at the hardware installed etc. This is quite a lot of information but is organized nicely.

Method# 3: Command Prompt

The easiest and fastest method of all is to use the command prompt. Just open the command prompt (Start –> Run –> cmd) and type in systeminfo. This will give most common information which we need about our system.

And what about the issue with all the folders you don’t close yourself upon system shut down (you simply press Shut Down and look like Windows closing all applications and open folders and then turns off) opening again on system startup? This one is really driving me mad… Any cure?

Actually there is a Windows setting for this. This can be easily configured in Windows. Just go to the following path:

Tools –> Folder Options –> View

Look for “Restore previous folder windows at logon”

If you want the open folders to be restored/reopened after your restart your system then check this box. If you don’t want, just uncheck it.

There is a command by which you can see the start time of the computer. Actually it is the network start time but the computers which have network capability start the network connection with the start of the system. Just go to the command prompt and issue the following commands:

net  statistics workstation

Just see before the statistics, the command will show the date and time since the computer started.

The first type of tool that I have chosen is the Windows Task Manager. Because usually Windows Task Manager is disabled by most of the modern Viruses, it is necessary to have alternatives which can work like the Windows Task Manager for managing all the processes. Killing the malicious process is the first step in troubleshooting.

As I have already told that I’ll be concentrating on portable tools wherever possible, I have selected two tools as alternatives to Windows Task Manager. Both of them are portable and can be run from a USB drive.

Process Explorer

Process Explorer is one of the popular of task managers which is portable and is more advanced than Windows Task Manager. The good thing about it is that it is maintained by Microsoft itself.

The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you’ll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you’ll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded.

The unique capabilities of Process Explorer make it useful for tracking down DLL-version problems or handle leaks, and provide insight into the way Windows and applications work.

DTaskManager

DTaskManager is another tool that is very good. It also offers more features than the standard Windows Task Manager. Its interface is more like the original Windows Task Manager and so is easier to use. Here is the publisher’s description:

DTaskManager, obviously, is a Task-Manager, but specifically engineered to give additional functionalities that the Windows bundled TaskManager (and other third party products) do not have:1. How to get rid of OGA?

In order to get rid of Office Genuine Advantage, you should have this funny thing installed on your system.
To install Office Genuine Advantage you should go to: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine
Validate your Office installation from the right hand side menu.

If you have a valid installation of Microsoft Office, it the validation test will pass otherwise it should report back that you don’t have a valid registration key for your Microsoft installation.

When the validation check is over, exit Internet Explorer.
Run the install.bat file from the downloaded file from below.
If it says 1 files copied successfully, go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and validate the Microsoft Office installation again. It should validate this time.

And if it says 0 files copied successfully, restart your computer and run the install.bat file again.
