It’s always a headache to open new tabs and type out all the web addresses daily. Opera has a very good function of saving the last open tabs automatically but the problem with it is that I want to open my default tabs every time I open my browser. Firefox gives the option of saving all the tabs to favorites and then open all the tabs using favorites menu. In Internet Explorer, there is no apparent way to save the default tabs which will automatically when opening the browser again.

I found out the Internet Explorer 7 has a built in functionality of multiple home pages. It means that like you set your home page in every browser, in Internet Explorer you can actually set multiple home pages which will open in tabs when Internet Explorer is started.

To set multiple homepages in Internet Explorer 7, go to Tools à Internet Options à General

Just keep on specifying all your pages which you want to be your home pages in new lines like the picture above. You can specify as many as you like. All the web pages will open in new tabs when Internet Explorer is started.

Following is the question asked by harikrishna in Technize Forums:

sir iam having one probelm in my laptop that is after it is going to the standby state it is not again coming to the actual state so whenever it go to standby mode iam shutdown the system by using battery
every time battery is picked out

While researching, I thought I should share it with all the Technize readers. So here’s the solution:

This problem occurs only in Windows XP SP1 or less. I would recommend updating with the latest security updates of Windows.

Download the following registry file and double click it to add the information to the registry.

Restart your computer and now the problem should be solved.

If you are a network administrator of a company and the company policy enforces that all the systems should be shutdown before leaving. It’s always a headache to go to each and every system to see whether it has been turned off properly or somebody has forgotten to turn off. And even sometimes we need to shutdown our systems after specific amount of time or on a specific time. First of all I’ll tell you how to shutdown a system after a certain amount of time.

Shutdown After A Specific Interval of Time:

If you want to shutdown the system after half an hour go to command prompt and issue the following command:

shutdown -t 1800

Where 1800 is the no. of seconds the system should wait before shutting down. In this case, the system will wait for 1800 seconds.

If you are not comfortable with the command line, then go to Start –> Run –> shutdown -i

This will bring you the Graphical interface where you can configure when to shutdown the system.

Shutdown At A Specific Time:

1- Through Command Prompt

Issue the following command to schedule your tasks via command prompt

at 00:00 cmd /c shutdown -t 30

This command will be executed at 12AM and display a warning that the system is shutting down after 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, the system will shutdown.

2- Through Scheduled Tasks GUI

If you are not comfortable with the command line, then you can simply go to the scheduled tasks ( Start –> All Programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> Scheduled Tasks) and schedule the system to shutdown automatically at the specified time.

I’m using windows live messenger beta9(downloaded from somewhere) and my PC have XP pro SP2!

There are a lot of ways to check the system information in Windows. One of the most common and most basic is to right click My Computer and go to properties. It will show you the basic information about the system.

If we need to know a bit of detailed system about our system, the following methods can be helpful.

Method# 1: Through MSINFO tool

Msinfo is a tool provided by Microsoft which gives you quite a detail about your system. To run this tool, go to Start –> Run –> msinfo32

This will open up a window which show you a lot of details about your system.

Method# 2: Windows Help And Support

Interestingly enough, Windows Help And Support gives a very good organized information about the system. Actually I prefer to use this method most of the time where applicable. To find the system information, go to Start –> Windows Help And Support.

Under Pick A Task, select “Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems”

From the left hand pane “Tools”, select My Computer Information.

Now from the right hand pane you can select different types of information that you can get. For Example, you can see the general information about the computer or you can have a look at the hardware installed etc. This is quite a lot of information but is organized nicely.

Method# 3: Command Prompt

The easiest and fastest method of all is to use the command prompt. Just open the command prompt (Start –> Run –> cmd) and type in systeminfo. This will give most common information which we need about our system.

If you know about any other methods, please do let me know through comments.

Recently Loki asked me about the problem that the folders which are not closed on system shutdown automatically show up while starting the system again. Here is his question:

And what about the issue with all the folders you don’t close yourself upon system shut down (you simply press Shut Down and look like Windows closing all applications and open folders and then turns off) opening again on system startup? This one is really driving me mad… Any cure?

Actually there is a Windows setting for this. This can be easily configured in Windows. Just go to the following path:

Tools –> Folder Options –> View

Look for “Restore previous folder windows at logon”

If you want the open folders to be restored/reopened after your restart your system then check this box. If you don’t want, just uncheck it.

There is a command by which you can see the start time of the computer. Actually it is the network start time but the computers which have network capability start the network connection with the start of the system. Just go to the command prompt and issue the following commands:

net statistics workstation

Just see before the statistics, the command will show the date and time since the computer started.

I hate rapidshare mainly because every second file on the internet seems to be available on rapidshare and rapidshare is miserable for free users. And if you have a shared internet IP, then forget about downloading from rapidshare. There are a zillion sites which have come up with their own file storage services but there seems to be no service which can compete rapidshare.

I usually use the service called mediafire which is also free ofcourse and gives quite decent stats and upload and download options. But recently I stumbled upon a new file sharing site with quite an amazing feature set. It has got a huge file size limit of 5 GB.

Some other features on the site are listed as:

Share by Direct Download Link or BitTorrent

The VIPeers hosting service offers you the perfect selection of easy sharing methods:

Download URL of the file

Send by email or post on Social networks: Facebook, FriendFeed, Delicious…

Download button for blogs

Plain button for forums

BitTorrent and Podmailing links for Peer-To-Peer downloads

Manage your VIPeers uploads and P2P downloads with Podmailing

To transfer many files you can use Podmailing, our tiny software which enables:

Upload entire folders as easily as files

Transfer manager for queueing and resuming uploads / downloads

Peer-To-Peer client, supporting BitTorrent “.torrent” and Podmailing “.zed” links

Hybrid protocol mixing http and BitTorrent

Deliver files by email or using VIPeers options listed above

Free software working on Windows XP/Vista and MacOS X

I think this is the best file hosting service I have encountered yet which also gives a desktop software client for managing our downloads and uploads. The torrent option is also awsome and unique. Please let me know about your experiences.

If you are a laptop user and you use the internet at different places like the office and at home etc, then it is a headache to change the network settings again and again. Usually there are different network settings in the office and at home.

NetSetMan comes to rescue in this situation. NetSetMan is a network settings manager which can easily switch between 6 different, visually structured profiles including:

* IP Address
* Subnet Mask
* Default Gateway
* DNS Server
* WINS Server
* Computer Name
* Workgroup
* DNS Domain
* Default Printer
* Network Drives
* SMTP Server
* Hosts File Entries
* Scripts (BAT, VS, JS, …)

So almost all the network settings can be found in one window. There are a total of 6 sets of configurations that can be changed and can be activated on a click of the mouse.

NetSetMan can be downloaded from the following location:

It has always been a hassle to boot the system from other than the already installed hard drive or the CD ROM. With the latest hardware and software improvements, some of the old hardware like motherboards don’t support booting from the modern hardware like the USB drives. PLoP is a software which can boot the system with which ever way you want. It can boot from hard drive, floppy, CD/DVD or even from USB drives.

The good thing about PLoP is that it doesn’t require complex configurations or separate partitions. It just needs to be installed and run. Download the software from the following location:

It’s a pretty good tool to fine tune your system. There was a promotion going on for Vnunet users. I thought I should share it with my readers also. In this promotion, you get a copy of TuneUpUtilities 2007 with the serial key absolutely free.

To try it, I installed it on my Windows 2003 server and it gave a warning message that it’s not for server operating systems and may not work correctly. The installation went on smoothly and then I started the trial version of TuneUpUtilities 2007 and added my key and it was fully functional

Chiranjib, our regular reader, was asking me continuously to suggest some alternatives to the default Windows system tools that are usually disabled in case of a virus attack. So I thought I would just write about all the tools I know which are helpful in troubleshooting a system. It will be a series of articles, each article with a specific type of tools. I would preferably write about portable tools so that if anybody wants to have them in the USB drive, it can be done easily. Then I will tell you how to safeguard your USB drive from viruses so that no virus affects the tools in the USB drive.

The first type of tool that I have chosen is the Windows Task Manager. Because usually Windows Task Manager is disabled by most of the modern Viruses, it is necessary to have alternatives which can work like the Windows Task Manager for managing all the processes. Killing the malicious process is the first step in troubleshooting.

As I have already told that I’ll be concentrating on portable tools wherever possible, I have selected two tools as alternatives to Windows Task Manager. Both of them are portable and can be run from a USB drive.

Process Explorer

Process Explorer is one of the popular of task managers which is portable and is more advanced than Windows Task Manager. The good thing about it is that it is maintained by Microsoft itself.

The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you’ll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you’ll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded.

The unique capabilities of Process Explorer make it useful for tracking down DLL-version problems or handle leaks, and provide insight into the way Windows and applications work.

Process Explorer can be downloaded from the following location:

Note: There is a file embedded within this post, please visit this post to download the file.

DTaskManager

DTaskManager is another tool that is very good. It also offers more features than the standard Windows Task Manager. Its interface is more like the original Windows Task Manager and so is easier to use. Here is the publisher’s description:

DTaskManager, obviously, is a Task-Manager, but specifically engineered to give additional functionalities that the Windows bundled TaskManager (and other third party products) do not have:1. Three different ways to close a process, as the “termination request”, the standard “forced termination” with dialogue tolerance, and the “forced termination” of any type of process, bypassing all permissions (it can also terminate running system processes).

2. DTaskManager allows you to suspend and reactivate a process (as in Linux). This is useful, for example, to temporarily suspend a task that uses system resources when you don’t want to terminate it (such as a DivX encoding process).

3. DTaskManager allows you to select more than one process at a time, and terminate all of them “simultaneously”.

4. DTaskManager does not need any useless confirmation.

DTaskManager can be downloaded from the following location:

Note: There is a file embedded within this post, please visit this post to download the file.

If you find or know about any other tool that is useful in troubleshooting a system, please do let us know about it in the comments. We will, at the end, gather all this information on a separate page called Network Admin’s Troubleshooting Toolkit.

Previously I have written about the cracked Windows Genuine Advantage. Today I want to write about Office Genuine Advantage Validation that has also been cracked. The latest version of the tool is 1.6.29.1. If you are having problems with the microsoft validation process, then you can use this tool to get rid of OGA. But please note that you should purchase the softwares in order to use them according to the copyright laws.

How to get rid of OGA?

In order to get rid of Office Genuine Advantage, you should have this funny thing installed on your system.
To install Office Genuine Advantage you should go to: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine
Validate your Office installation from the right hand side menu.

If you have a valid installation of Microsoft Office, it the validation test will pass otherwise it should report back that you don’t have a valid registration key for your Microsoft installation.

When the validation check is over, exit Internet Explorer.
Run the install.bat file from the downloaded file from below.
If it says 1 files copied successfully, go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine and validate the Microsoft Office installation again. It should validate this time.

And if it says 0 files copied successfully, restart your computer and run the install.bat file again.

Please let me know about your experiences.

I had to do some research and I needed some videos which I had found on youtube and other social sites like google videos etc. As I didn’t have internet at my home, I needed to download all the videos in order to see them offline. I was searching for a comprehensive solution which could download from all the streaming video sites.

I have found Orbit Downloader to be the best software that can grab videos from almost all the sites that I know about. I was so excited when it grabbed all the videos that I wanted from all the sites. Most of all, it is a download manager and it’s free. So you can virtually download anything including the video from social site. It also states that it can download from rapidshare. I will definitely this capability and let my visitors know.

How to download the videos?

Start Orbit Downloader
Go to Tools –> Grab++
This will start Grab++

Refresh your page which has got the embeded video which you intend to download.
Start the video and see the Grab++ window. The link to the embeded video should’ve been added to it.
Select the video and press Download.
This will take you to the main Orbit window and will start downloading the video.

Please let me know about your experiences with downloading with Orbit and also share what you use for downloading streaming videos.

Yesterday a friend of my came to my desk and asked me to copy some pictures. I inserted his USB flash drive and woosh — Virus alert says my Antivirus. For more information about which antivirus I use, please see this article. I wrote down the virus name and went to his computer to see if everything was fine on his computer. Unfortunately the system had been stuck with the same virus. So I researched about the virus and here are the details about removing W32.sillyFDC.

W32.SillyFDC is a common virus for removable device users. Actually it starts spreading from the removable devices. It may copy itself from drive A to Z.

Removal instructions:

# Restart the computer in safe mode.

# Download and install hijackthis.

mscalc.exe

startupfolder

config_

startupfolder.com

config_.com

# Run Hijackthis and go to Misc Tools –> Delete a file on reboot –> give the paths of all the above files. Please note that the path should be the same as noted above.

# Run Hijackthis and do a system scan. Delete all the 04 entries by the above names.

# Download Smart Virus Remover from here.
