Folder Options missing in Windows XP

by Sanix in Misc on May 5, 2007

After a virus attack in one of my client machines, the folder options from the windows explorer was missing and we were unable to show all the files including the hidden ones. So here’s what I did to restore it back:

Go to Run –>gpedit.msc
User Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> Windows Components –> Windows Explorer
Enable and then Disable “Removes Folder Options menu from Tools menu
Close all windows explorer windows and then open again.. most probably your folder options is back icon smile Folder Options missing in Windows XP

I recently had a virus attack, and according to McAfee it was a Trojan Virus.
I am not able to see the Folder Options in Windows Explorer, I tried using the above method to get them back but unfortunately it didn’t work.
When I type in gpedit.msc I get “file not found message” is there any other way to get them back?

4 Sanix May 29, 2007 at 8:14 pm

Hmm .. which version of windows are you using?

Reply

5 Sanix May 29, 2007 at 8:20 pm

You can use the full path to the file if you are using Windows XP or 2000. Go to C:\Windows\System32\gpedit.msc where C: is your system drive.

Reply

6 Nomi May 29, 2007 at 8:27 pm

I am using Windows XP Home Edition

Reply

7 Nomi May 29, 2007 at 8:31 pm

I was looking at some other forums and according to them gpedit.msc is not available in XP Home. It suggests using regedit instead, but don’t know how to make the settings from there.

Reply

8 Sanix May 29, 2007 at 8:57 pm

Ok .. that seems simple then .. Just go to Start –> Run –> regedit. The registry editor will open. Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer

In the right hand pane, see if there is a value called NoFolderOptions

If yes then change it’s value to 0.

1 means hide options and 0 means show options.

Reply

9 Nomi May 30, 2007 at 4:02 pm

I don’t see a value “NoFolderOptions” in the right hand pane. All I see there is “(Default)” with no data value.

Reply

10 Sanix May 30, 2007 at 5:59 pm

If you don’t see any NoFolderOptions then you should create a DWORD named NoFolderOptions and put 0 as it’s value. That means you’re forcing the explorer to show folder options.

Reply

11 Nomi May 30, 2007 at 8:09 pm

No Luck!!! Tried the above. It is still not showing the options.

Reply

12 Sanix May 30, 2007 at 8:12 pm

Did you restart the explorer after applying the tweak?

You should your startup items through msconfig to see if explorer.exe is loading in startup.. To open msconfig, go to Run –> msconfig –> startup. Make sure that no explorer is loading at your system startup.

i got problem with it….its because of this virus “Trixcu.A”

It disables the following functions:
- Find of the Start menu.
- Folder options of the Start menu.
- the Task Manager.
- the Windows Registry Editor.
- the CMD shell.
# It hides the extensions of the files, and the files and subfolders that have the attribute hidden, in order to go unnoticed.
# It turns the computer off once it has carried out all the changes in the system, by running the following command:
shutdown.exe -s -f -t 1

As for Drak..I too had the same problems with the virus/worm “Trixcu.A” but i manages to detected it early and use Autoruns and process explorer to disable/kill the virus at the startup process…after that I use Ravmon virus killer patch to restore my setting to the original. Or u can try manual editing (refer to http://edubase.com.my/v1/trixcu.a-worm.html).

Good luck!

RE Folder Options not displayed in Windows Explorer.

I have the problem described in earlier , May of this year, postings. gpedit is not available on my Win XP Home.

Looking for :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer as described by Sania May 29,

Under “policies” There are “NonEnum”, “Rating”, and ‘System”. Not “Explorer”. This is true of my other desktop and my laptop. Also none of them have gpedit.

Nevertheless, the one desktop has Folder Options displayed in a window to the left which is quite convenient..

Any help will be appreciated as I like that Folder Option function for quickly burning CDs

Hi! I have the same problem as NOMI and I’ve followed the steps that you’ve given Nomi: Start –> Run –> regedit. The registry editor will open. Go to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer.
I followed your instructions, but it didn’t work for my computer.

Then I tried Go to Run –>gpedit.msc
User Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> Windows Components –> Windows Explorer
Enable and then Disable “Removes Folder Options menu from Tools menu”

BUT there’s NO “Removes Folder Options menu from Tools menu”
What will I do? Help me please…Thank you.

I viewed your recommendations concerning Folder Options missing in Windows XP but have not been successful in returning the Folder Options window to the explorer Tool Menu. My problem began during an uninstall of Quicken 2008. The last step of the install process is DELETE THE QUICKEN SHARED FOLDERS. To do this I need to “Show hidden files and folders”. Hi, i have read your posts on how to fix the menu bar missing and tried the gpedit but it did not work, i have restarted the machine and still nothing. The problem i have is this:

Windows Explorer – working fine
Taskbar – working fine
Quicklaunch – working fine
Folders – nightmare!

In the folders (all of them), there is no menu bar at the top (incase ive not called it by its right name, i mean the bit with FILE, EDIT, VIEW, etc in in), its there if i use windows explorer to view my machine but not if say i click on my computer, or a shortcut to any folder.

Any thoughts ?

Question.. if my folder option is missing, it means my computer has a virus? is that right?

Reply

144 Sanix May 30, 2008 at 2:37 am

emman, thanks for asking. Missing folder options does not mean that your system has a virus. It can also be disabled administratively. But if your PC is a home pc, then it’s almost sure that some type of virus has been playing with your system. Besides recovering folder options, you should scan for viruses in this case.

Reply

145 emman May 30, 2008 at 6:16 am

ah okie thanks..

if its disabled administratively how can i enable it?

one more

what if my folder option is missing and when i try to click ctrl+alt+delete this message will pop up “registry editing has been disabled by administrator” is that means my laptop is having a virus?

thanks for answering my questions (^_^)

Reply

146 Sanix May 30, 2008 at 11:48 pm

emman, Folder options can be administratively disabled by doing the following:
Go to Start –> Run –> gpedit.msc
This will open group policy editor. Go to the following key:
User Configuration –> Administrative templates –> Windows Components –> Windows Explorer.
In the right hand pane select “Removes the Folder Options menu from the tools menu”
Enable it or disable it from there.
emman, if you need a good antivirus, please see my following post where you can get 6 months trial of Kaspersky internet security. Enjoy :-)

If you don’t see any NoFolderOptions then you should create a DWORD named NoFolderOptions and put 0 as it’s value. That means you’re forcing the explorer to show folder options.

This Procedure works for me:

Run –>gpedit.msc

Go to these specified items on the left then collapse:

User Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> Windows Components –> Windows Explorer (Open here)

Double-click “Removes Folder options menu from Tools menu”

Check “Disable” (IF “Not configured” is default)

If it doesn’t work still, try to restart the system.

got problem with it….its because of this virus “Trixcu.A”

It disables the following functions:
- Find of the Start menu.
- Folder options of the Start menu.
- the Task Manager.
- the Windows Registry Editor.
- the CMD shell.
# It hides the extensions of the files, and the files and subfolders that have the attribute hidden, in order to go unnoticed.
# It turns the computer off once it has carried out all the changes in the system, by running the following command:
shutdown.exe -s -f -t 1

So I tried the C:\Windows\System32\gpedit.msc way. It then says access to it is disallowed. Help. I really need to get the hidden folder option back.

When my antivirus killed the virus on my usb, it hid the folders. I know because the size is still the same and whenever I paste the same file in there, it says it’s already there and if I’d want to replace it. Thank you so much.

Then I get a notice from my SpySweeper about the file texrtsjhfr84iusjfo84f loading on my computer. My spy sweeper lets me decide whether I want to keep or remove it. I select remove but it stays on my computer. When I try go back to the folder where it is located I can’t because hidden files are not visable anymore and my folder options are gone again. Grrr it’s a never-ending cycle!! I have now rebooted my computer about 4 or 5 times and my folder options will not show anymore. Oh and now I can’t see pictures on websites. Well they come up as blank boxes with some little square that I have to right-click and then click show picture. Help! Please

mohamad khair, it seems that you’re not cleaning your system. Please do an online scanning of your PC and then try these options.

I can’t open any windows! When I click on an icon, the window doesn’t come up. All that appears is an alert box saying that I need to assign that icon in Folder Options, located in the Control Panel; however, it won’t bring up the Control Panel, giving me the same message no matter which icon I click on. Please help me!

gpedit.msc works! Now I can use the search button. But my folder option is still not showing itself. will work on it further. Haven’t tried the remover yet. Thanks for the tips, lol.

Hey the above method worked. That is gpedit.msc method

Go to Run –>gpedit.msc
User Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> Windows Components –> Windows Explorer
Enable and then Disable “Removes Folder Options menu from Tools menu”
Close all windows explorer windows and then open again.. most probably your folder options is back

I am running windows xp with service pack 3. When I right click to create a new folder, the new folder is created with random names for the folder. I do not have to type anything. I have trendmicro 2010 running as well as unhack me monitor. What could be happening?

Hi guys , unfotunately this is not working for me.
It seems there is a virus in my machine and it is in the temp folder of local settings, but I don’t see this folder because I can’t enable view hidden files from folder options.

Although I have deleted the temp folder by just typing in the full path but I am still not able to see the folder options.

Running gpedit.msc didn’t work, because there was no Windows Explorer option.
Running regedit, I added the NoFolderOptions with 0, then rebooted my computer, and it still doesn’t work. There is also a HonorAutorunSetting = 0×1 and a (standard) type SZ, (value not set).
