Almost every Hard Disks and CD/DVD drives support Ultra DMA Mode (Faster Copying Mode) and PIO (Slower Copying Mode). Although Ultra DMA Mode is enabled by Default Windows Installation by some times it is not the case. Or it can happen that the Ultra DMA Mode of a device switches to PIO Mode without any reason.

Now I tell you how to allow faster copying by setting Transfer Mode to Ultra DMA. Set all your Hard Disk and CD/DVD ROM or Writer Drives to Ultra DMA Mode. This tweak also enables fast CD/DVD Burning.

For Windows 2000/XP Users

Click on Start button then Open up the Properties of My Computer, on the Hardware tab click Device Manager. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, Doube Click Primary IDE Channel (Here two Primary IDE Channel are shown may be you have only one).

Note: Device 0 or Device 1, is translated as master or slave drive respectively). In the properties where no device is detected the field selection is grayed out, leave that field without any change.

When Properties Open Up select Advanced Settings tab, In the Transfer Mode Field select DMA if available (if DMA if available is already selected but in Current Transfer Mode PIO is showing then select PIO only in Transfer Mode then reseclect DMA if available ).

Repeat the steps above for other Primary IDE Channel (if available) and Secondary IDE Channel

It may be that your hard drive’s has a lower DMA than that shown here.

I’ve done this. My dvd/cdrw teac dw224ea supports ultra dma 2, but shows up as dma in win 2000. DMA if available is selected. Any ideas?
