The AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX is a mobile processor designed to offer the highest performance in big laptops and/or gaming laptops. The processor was launched in January 2021 and belongs to the Cezanne generation of chips. This eight-core processor is based on the AMD Zen 3 architecture with a base clock frequency of 3.3GHz, a maximum boost clock of 4.6GHz and 16 threads, thanks to simultaneous multithreading. The Ryzen 9 5900HX is manufactured using the TSMC’s 7nm technology with a single core complex design on its Cezanne die to allow for low latency communication. The chip has overclocking support as indicated with the “X” in its name.
This AMD Ryzen 9 processor has a default TDP of 45+W with a configurable TDP range of 35-54W depending on the user’s preference, with a maximum operating temperature of 105oC. The Ryzen 9 5900HX supports the DDR4 and LPDDR4 system memory controllers operating at frequencies of up to 3200MHz and 4266MHz respectively. With these two fast memory channel controllers, PCIe 3.0 connectivity, and the 4MB L2 and 16MB L3 cache you can expect a very good experience from this processor.
Furthermore, the AMD Ryzen 5900HX incorporates AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics with 8 compute units and engine clock speed of 2.1GHz. This gives the processor the ability of a good graphic for gaming in 4K resolutions with its 16GB of VRAM. However, the GPU’s unparalleled performance depends on factors like cooling solution, RAM solution, clock frequency, and configurable TDP.
Despite not being the most powerful CPU, the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX comes second after the Ryzen 9 5980HX offering slightly similar gaming performance. The Ryzen 5000 series processors based on the Zen 3 architecture have a significantly higher instruction per cycle (IPC) compared to Zen 2 generation of processors with an average IPC gain of 19% according to AMD. Some application reviews show a 12% gain for chips operating at the same clock speeds. If we compare 5900HX and 5900HS, the only difference is in their clock frequencies and TDP where the 5900HX has a higher base clock speed (0.3GHz) and a 10W higher default TDP.
