Intel Core i9-11980HK Laptop Processor (Review & Specifications)

The Intel Core i9-11980HK is a top-end processor in the Tiger Lake H45 processor lineup launched in the second quarter of 2021. The Core i9-11980HK processor shares a similar physical design and some CPU specifications with Intel Core i7-11800H, having 8 cores and 16 threads with access to 24MB L3 cache. The Core i9-11980HK incorporates Intel UHD Graphics that can support up to 4 displays at once operating at a base frequency of 350MHz and a maximum graphics of 1.45GHz. The only difference between these two processors lies in their clock speeds. The Core i9-11980HK has a base frequency of 2.6GHz and a turbo boost frequency that can reach up to 5.0GHz with an adequate CPU cooling system.

The major advantage the Core i9-11980HK has over the Core i7-11800H is its 13.04% faster CPU speed and the 0.4GHz higher turbo boost clock speed. The base clock speed of the Core i9-11980HK is 2.6GHz when the TDP is set at 45W. This TDP can, however, be configured up to 65W at a cTDP-up frequency of 3.3GHz. All of its 8 cores can reach a max turbo boost of 4.5GHz, unlike the Core i7-11800H which hits a maximum 4.2GHz on all its cores. What makes the Core i7-11800H better than the 11980HK is its 20W lower TDP thus more power-efficient.

The Core i9-11980K has many CPU specifications similar to other Tiger Lake H45 processors. It is designed using the 10nm SuperFin processing node and supports a DDR4-3200 dual-channel memory controller with a maximum memory bandwidth of 51.2 GB/s. The chip also features PCIe version 4.0 with a maximum of 20 lanes connected to the CPU as well as Intel Thunderbolt 4 support. Being an HK processor, the chip is unlocked for overclocking allowing the user to multiply the clock multiplier table and other utilities. Although, this is mostly beneficial for bigger laptops with an efficient cooling system as power and thermal limits will be of significance.

Summarily, the CPU is useful in both gaming and high-performance content creation workloads. The Core i9-11980HK can be used to play games on most of the current day AAA titles. It is also very handy when it comes to media encoding, live video editing, and 3D modeling applications. Basically, most users would want to buy this CPU because of its ability to handle 4K video streams, many current games, and content creation.
